Observability

Observability is the ability to understand the internal state of a system from the data it produces, mainly metrics, logs and traces. Unlike monitoring, which alerts when something crosses a known threshold, observability lets teams investigate failures nobody anticipated; for example, tracing why a payment takes several extra seconds as it passes through multiple services.
